Creative hobbies based on glass frosted by the sea- 10 ideas of accessories and decorations!
Unlike humans, Nature is perfect. And its exceptional endurance despite our constant efforts to destroy it is the irrefutable proof. By its ability to degrade waste and even give them a stature, it is worthy of profound admiration. For example, the glass frosted by the sea is the result of polluting activities of the man that water has been able to develop. The perpetual movement of waves shapes shards and dulls to give them an attraction they have never known … But did you know that you can reciprocate it by relieving it of at least some of the excessive load?
Recycling plastic bottles, cardboard boxes and tin cans are just a few of the first steps towards personal greener success. But there are many others … The next time you walk on the beach, just pick up fragments of frosted glass by the sea! We will take care of the rest by giving you plenty of original ideas to make the most of it later.
Where to find frosted glass and how to “harvest” it?
The first thing to know about frosted glass by the sea is that, with a little luck, it is a DIY material that is completely free. In other words, who is lucky enough to live close to the sea or the ocean could enjoy it for free. Others, do not despair, we will offer some alternatives to get enough for a reasonable price.
People living on or near the coast should look for a known beach, located relatively close to a populated urban area (alas, more people means more waste). At best, it would be a windy beach, so with significant waves, which will have more pebbles than sand. Visit it during the low tide and bring with you a small rake (and / or shovel) and some container to put your beautiful finds.
The proposed idea has aroused your curiosity, yet you are hundreds of kilometers from the nearest beach? Keep in mind that you can now buy sea glass packages at some hobby stores and even order them online at Amazon and other e-commerce sites. There are lots of 50,60, 100 etc. pieces whose prices are in the 5-12 euros together.
Easy manual activities to enjoy the best of sea glass
The first creative leisure based glass frosted by the sea is super easy because it does not require tools. The material needed to make it is also common and it is very likely that you already have it at home. This is the realization of a simple and super appealing seaside spirit tealight (presented above).
All you need are the items shown in the photo above, ie: some sort of vintage jar (a shallow Mason jar will be ideal for the purpose), a tealight candle with its matching glass holder (or a small simple glass) and, of course – pieces of frosted glass in various shapes and sizes for filling.
First, place the small candle glass in the center of the jar. If necessary, you can fix it on the spot with a few drops of instant glue, but this step is not obligatory. Fill the void formed between the two glass walls with mismatched shards when reaching the edge. Place the tealight candle inside the glass, light using a candle lighter and that’s it.
Mobile deco effect shaded frosted glass and driftwood
Then we will try a decorative object a little more complex to do, but still perfectly suitable for novice DIYers. It is a wind chime or rather a mobile decorative because it is appreciated primarily for its super charming appearance and not for the sounds it could emit when placed in a suitable windy place.
What is particularly interesting is that you can include in this creative project other objects recovered on the beach. A driftwood stick as support, pebbles and seashells of all kinds, starfish … The small maritime treasures that marry the idea of this project seaside style are quite numerous!
The other material includes: a coil of very fine jeweler wire or fishing line, a piece of rope (at best in natural fibers) for hanging, an extra strong multi-purpose glue tube which becomes completely transparent after drying and finally- as much ceramic debris and frosted glass as you can get.
As you can probably imagine, the idea of using glue is to avoid drilling fragments which requires specialized instruments and absolute precision. On the other hand, to tie them one after the other all along the wire in nylon or metal so that they form a garland and to fix them with a drop of glue on both sides is much easier!
Finally, it should be mentioned that if you want to get a shaded effect like this, you will have to pick up / buy small glasses in green, blue and white (the transparent glass appears rather white when it is frosted because it is no longer completely translucent) and arrange them to form a colored gradient. For best results, you can also observe a gradation in their size.
How to make your own frosted glass jewelry
The jewels in materials of recovery and the accessories which one can manufacture oneself in general are unique in the world! If this is the first time you embark on this adventure, you probably have no tools at your disposal. In this case, we recommend you try one of our necklaces whose design does not require drilling marine gems:
The first variant is to take advantage of the trick with the glue replacing the drill that we used for mobiles. Otherwise, you can wrap silver wire around your small frosted glass and attach the loop for hanging. Finally, if you know how to make macrame, weave a miniature bag, slip in your “gemstone” and you’re ready!
If, on the other hand, you have a jeweler drill, the possibilities of creations based on frosted glass multiply again. Carefully drill each grain of frosted glass, equip it with a small ring to suspend it and everything is played! The rest is a matter of fantasy – bracelets, earrings and necklaces straight out of the sea that you can always have on you.
It will end with a tip that will be very useful if it is the first time you use your drill. Fill a plastic container with a small amount of water and place the sea glass that you want to pierce. It should be slightly covered with water but not completely submerged. This will prevent the piece from warming up too much and will reduce the risk of cracking when drilling.
